Flowers fit for Autumn and Winter Weddings
So you’ve chosen a Winter wedding date, and why not!? We LOVE an Autumn or Winter wedding, there’s actually so many advantages to a date later in the year; a festive atmosphere, crisp weather, those gorgeous natural tones and let’s not forget darker evenings that help the lights to truly sparkle as you dance the night away. But now you might be feeling stuck, wondering what flowers are available in Autumn and Winter? What colours and styles work best? How do you plan a wedding without a peony in sight!? Well, fear not, we are here to give you our top Autumn Winter floral picks for your special day.
WINTER BERRIES
Forget flowers for a moment. Why not try adding some winter berries? In particular, holly berries and cranberries, like little jewels within any arrangement. They can add a pop of colour to your bouquet or centrepieces, a hint of fruity fragrance and really compliment any Christmas styling, making any wedding festive. Other common berries to use could be snow berries or even viburnum berries, all of which tend to be available throughout the year so will easily slot into your Autumn or Winter styling.
You don’t have to let berries stop there, we love to see berry tones in the colours used at your wedding - the bridesmaids dresses, groomsmen’s suits or even in the napkins and table linen!? It’s warming, it’s tonal with the natural foliage of the time and makes for a really gorgeous, rich design for your wedding day.
WINTER HEATHER
The clue is in the name! This beautiful, tall flower is a stunning way to add colour and texture to a bouquet in the winter. They are hardy and grow well in February and March so can easily be available in those winter months. Choose to have it as your central focus or to compliment other flower choices, either way it’s a real must for a winter wedding floral design.
WINTER CLEMATIS
Another one making a clear statement of suitability for your winter wedding! Much like the summer version, clematis have a delicate look, are beautifully fragrant and would make a wonderful addition to an Autumn or Winter wedding. They have a creamy colour and often have contrasting flecks near their centre. Beautiful in table displays they are readily available in December and January.
BRANCHES
Once again, let’s pop the blooms on the shelf for a moment and appreciate the beauty of a bare branch. In the same way florists accent their arrangements with foliage and grasses in the Spring and Summer months, there is something stunning about an arrangement that is adorned with twigs and branches. It adds texture and tone and compliments the hedgerow of the season. Foliage can also be your best friend, just as in summer, but you have a wider variety of texture available to you. If you really want to go for that Christmassy vibe for your winter wedding then adding yew branches or lichen covered twigs to your bouquet will really make it festive.
HELLEBORES
Hellebores come in a range of tones and can stand on their own or work well with other blooms. They are a delicate and romantic flower, perfect for a winter flower crown, in your bouquet with lots of foliage or in small bud vases to accentuate your tables. Top tip though they tend to droop, so make sure any table arrangements have plenty of water. However you use them, if you're looking for flowers to add colour (deep purples, maybes, pinks, greens, yellows and whites) to your winter wedding then look no further.
ANEMONES
Delicate but bold, their stark contrast between their centre and the outer petals, makes them visually unique. For something special try the white anemone with the black centre for a modern look. If that’s not for you, what is great about the anemone is their differing colours such as blues or purples which could be perfect for your wintery vibes and introduce luxurious jewel and berry tones.
